A plastic closure bag or water resistant bag helps, but damage has been known to happen, so I customarily take no risks by putting that kind of item in my carryon bag. Most hostels today have hair dryers, but if you’re used to a better dryer, you’ll want to bring a travel model with you. Some hostels have coffee machines and others do not.
